EDUCATION

Evidence shows that just one-year of extra education in Tanzania can increase a child’s future income levels by 30%. However, Tanzania being one of the world’s poorest countries, this is no simple task. As a direct result of negative attitudes towards gender and other obstacles, girls across Tanzania are missing out on an education and the chance to achieve their potential.

Girls face huge barriers to accessing school – it is estimated that 1 in 10 fail to complete their education with over 40% dropping out before they complete primary school. Girls are at huge risk of early marriage, teenage pregnancy, violence, HIV/Aids, lack of access to sanitation products and facilities, lack of social support, and lack of menstrual health facilities, stigmatization of menstruation

What we do

Addressing SRHR barriers to girl’s education

TCSO is using a rights-based approach to address education barriers for girls particularly barriers that are grounded on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) issues and those related to gender based violence (GBV) and discrimination of girls. These challenges include but not limited menstrual health, early marriage, female genital mutilation and teenage pregnancies.

TCSO is working to address the SRH-related barriers that significantly affect the life of school girls resulting in limited access to equitable education as well as poor school attendance, retention and performance. These challenges include lack of sanitary pads, limited knowledge about menstrual health management (MHM), and inadequate access to SRH information and services
